The City of Greater Sudbury has four seasons and the temperature and activities differ from one month to the next. To help you be prepared for what lies ahead, we have created a monthly guide to help you and give you some insight into your daily life as a Greater Sudbury resident.

 

We also have information on Canadian holidays and other celebrations and a packed Community Events Calendar to prepare you for your life in the City.

 

 

January:

 

• The average temperature in January ranges from a high of -9˚C to a low of -19˚C.

 

• Weather conditions include snowfall, below zero temperatures and sunshine.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes winter coats, hats, mittens or gloves, winter boots, and scarves.

 

• Elementary schools close for the holidays.

• Annual City of Greater Sudbury community events include the Festival of Lights and the
Dowling Winter Carnival.

 

 

February:

 

• The average temperature in February ranges from a high of -7˚C to a low of -17˚C.

 

• Weather conditions include snowfall, below zero temperatures and sunshine.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes winter coats, hats, mittens or gloves, winter boots, and scarves.

 

• Elementary schools close for Family Day, the third Monday of the month.

• Annual City of Greater Sudbury community events include the Northern Ontario Challenge Girls Hockey Tournament, La Brunante and Pond Hockey Festival on the Rock.

 

 

March:

 

• The average temperature in March ranges from a high of 0˚C to a low of -11˚C.

 

• The weather begins to warm up, snow may begin to melt and there can be rainfall.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes warm, water-resistant jackets, boots, hats, mittens or gloves, and umbrellas.

 

• Elementary schools have a one-week break during the month where children are off from school. The dates for March break will differ according to different school levels and boards.

April:

 

• The average temperature in April ranges from a high of 8˚C to a low of -2˚C.

 

• The weather is still warming up, the snow is melting and there can be periods of rainfall.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes warm jackets, hats, gloves, waterproof footwear, and umbrellas.

 

• Elementary schools are closed for Good Friday.

May:

 

• The average temperature in May ranges from a high of 17˚C to a low of 5˚C.

 

• The weather is warm, with rainy and sunny days.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes light, waterproof coats and umbrellas.

 

• Elementary schools are closed for Victoria Day.

June:

 

• The average temperature in June ranges from a high of 22˚C to a low of 10˚C.

 

• The weather is warm and sunny.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes light clothing and sandals.

 

• The elementary school year is over at the end of June and children are on vacation for the summer months.

• Annual City of Greater Sudbury community events include Chelmsford Western Days, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Downtown Rotary Blues for Food Festival, National Aboriginal Day and the Finnish-Canadian Grand Festival.

 

 

July:

 

• The average temperature in July ranges from a high of 25˚C to a low of 13˚C.

 

• The weather is hot and sunny.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes light clothing, sandals, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen during the day, and bug repellant in the evening.

 

• Elementary school students are on summer vacation.

• Annual City of Greater Sudbury community events include Science North Canada Day Celebrations, Italian Festival, Northern Lights Festival Boréal, Sudbury Pride Festival, Sudbury Dragon Boat Festival, Sudbury Gem and Mineral Show, Greater Sudbury Blueberry Festival, Greek Festival, Sudbury Panhellenic International Soccer Tournament and the Whitefish Lake Pow Wow.

 

 

August:

 

• The average temperature in August ranges from high of 23˚C to a low of 12˚C.

 

• The weather is hot and sunny.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes light clothing, sandals, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen during the day, and bug repellant in the evening.

 

• Elementary schools are on summer vacation; however school may begin at the end of the month. Start dates vary from year to year, usually falling at the end of August or beginning of September.

• Annual City of Greater Sudbury community events include the Canadian Garlic Festival and Sudbury Summerfest.

 

 

September:

 

• The average temperature in September ranges from a high of 17˚C to a low of 7˚C.

 

• It can still be very warm and sunny but it often cools down in the evenings.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes light clothing and sandals, and jackets and pants in the evening.

 

• Elementary schools begin classes again. Start dates vary from year to year and the new school year may begin at the end of August or beginning of September.

• The weather is cooler and evenings can be chilly.

 

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes jackets, closed toe shoes, and umbrellas.

 

• Elementary schools are closed for Thanksgiving.

November:

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes coats, hats, boots, mittens or gloves, and scarves.

 

• Elementary schools have no holiday closures in November.

December:

• Suggested outdoor clothing includes winter coats, hats, mittens or gloves, winter boots, and scarves.

 

• Elementary schools are closed for winter and Christmas break during the last week of the month.
